CALL FOR ACTION AGAINST DAM CONSTRUCTION
Government of Myanmar and China Power Investment Corporation are building a 50-storey high dam at the confluence of Mali and N’Mai Rivers, 27 miles upstream from capital city of Kachin State. The Irrawaddy River, the second longest river in Greater Mekong Sub-region and ‘lifeblood’ of Myanmar, is originated from that confluence (in Burmese: Myitsone). The purpose of this dam is obviously to provide electricity to China.
The residents of Kachin State, somehow, have always been rely on China’s economy. We have always been in awe of China’s booming economy, which also helps Myanmar people. If the electricity from Kachin State helps the China’s economy, we know it would also help Myanmar economy. However, the costs for this kind of mega project far outweigh the benefits. Though comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment has yet to be carried out, enormous negative impacts on local community, livelihoods and environment are eminent.
Firstly, the dam will flood and destroy the Confluence, one of the most significant cultural heritage sites for the Kachin people and an important landmark and tourism site for all of Myanmar. Secondly, millions of people will be negatively affected downstream and 15,000 will be immediately displaced upstream. People will lose their homes, lands, and natural resource base. Thirdly, construction of the dam will cause serious environmental degradation and serious flooding. Therefore, we Kachin people did objected the project and sent appeal letter to Myanmar Government. However, amidst objections, the ground breaking ceremony was carried out on December 21, 2009.
We, the people of Kachin State and Myanmar, call for action against the dam construction in Mali Zup or Myitsone. You are most welcome regardless of your nationality, ethnicity and religion for this cause.
